Grand Vent is a 15 acre vineyard sitting in the mout of the Petaluma Gap AVA (www.petalumagap.com).
Twelve acres of the vineyard is Pinot Noir with clones Pommard 4, Dijon 113, 943, and 667 with a three acres of Syrah perched high on a slope all on 1103 Paulson root stock. In his book, A New California Wine, Jon Bonne describes this vineyard as “perhaps… the most challenging vineyard in all of California", located in the Two Rock area outside of Petaluma in the heart of Sonoma dairy country.
Our unique Terroir produces really special and interesting flavors with exceptionally long hang time. Planted on rolling slopes in a picturesque valley composed primarily of Steinbeck Loam, the small vineyard site produces depth and complexity. The combination of the cool climate and wind push hang times to a nervous mid to late October allowing flavor maturation to continue while waiting on sugar.
The Pinot has been described as stacked and packed with fruit of dark and concentrated cherries presented in a fresh lively manner. Intent and complex it delivers good acidity and a healthy tannic backbone with a smooth and luscious lingering finish. The Syrah has been described to contain the flavors of blackberries spice and lots of natural pepper with a luscious lingering finish.
We take great pride in our growing practices, farming this small vineyard like a garden, and periodically use consultants to help us through transitions into new practices or to manage exceptions. We focus on sustainable farming practices and balance the introduction of new but practical measures for improvement.
